Bringing Technology to the Bedside: The Exura Mobile Workstation Story

Our Vision and Mission

Vision: Our Vision is a future where mobile technology seamlessly delivers digitally enhanced care, fostering greater dignity, reassurance, and hope for every patient.

Mission: To provide healthcare professionals with innovative and reliable mobile hardware solutions that seamlessly integrate digital platforms at the point of care, empowering them to deliver enhanced, dignified, and reassuring care to their patients.

Listen, Design & Support

Exura by Agile follows a comprehensive three-stage approach.

We listen by identifying your specific requirements through reference site visits and user needs analysis to design the right mobile workstation solution.

Our design prioritises user-friendliness with independently height-adjustable components, superior manoeuvrability, and infection control features including materials compatible with NHS cleaning chemicals. Built with ‘NO WELD’ structural design for maximum stability, all structural parts are made in Britain using superior quality materials.

Our Support extends beyond delivery with comprehensive service including staff training, on-site implementation, 100% uptime guarantee for mobile workstations, 10-year service guarantee, and regular health checks – ensuring the most stable and durable mobile workstations on the market.

Built by Hand, Tested to Perfection

Every Exura mobile workstation is meticulously hand-assembled in our dedicated workshop by skilled technicians. From aluminium frame construction to power system integration, every component is carefully fitted to meet our exacting standards.

Each cart undergoes comprehensive testing before leaving our facility – battery systems are cycled, mobility mechanisms stress-tested, and electrical connections verified. This rigorous process ensures healthcare professionals can rely on Exura carts to perform consistently in demanding clinical environments.

The Exura Story Timeline

1990s

Agile Group Begins Healthcare Workspace Design

Agile Group started designing and building systems for the workspaces of doctors and nurses during this decade, long before flat monitor technology had even appeared in healthcare settings. This was the beginning of our journey in understanding the unique challenges of medical workspace design.
1990s

1995

Deep Computer Challenge

Designing a nurse station in 1995 involved placing the computer diagonally in the corner of the desk because the monitors were so deep and bulky. The entire setup still required keyboard and mouse pads to be positioned in front of the monitor, creating significant spatial constraints. This era represented the early challenges of integrating technology into healthcare environments when equipment was far less sophisticated than today.
1995

Early 2000s

Flat Screen Revolution Begins

The whole concept of workstation design started to change dramatically as flat screen monitors began appearing in healthcare settings. In addition to this technological advancement, more and more processes started to become digital, quickly pushing the need for all staff to have easy access to not just fixed workstations, but multiple and mobile IT-enabled workstations positioned closer and closer to the point of care.
Early 2000s

Mid-2000s to Early 2010s

Market Research and US Leadership

Seeing this monumental shift happening in the market, Agile started to work on developing products to suit the emerging demand. Our research soon revealed that the US market was many years ahead in this particular area, thanks to generous government grants provided to implement EPR (Electronic Patient Record) systems across American healthcare facilities.<
Mid-2000s to Early 2010s

2012

Major Investment in US Technology

In 2012, Agile made a significant strategic investment of £1.2 million into the design rights for a recently developed but not yet marketed product. This product had been the result of a multi-million pound investment by a leading US provider. However, this fast-growing American company was acquired during the development process by a competitor that already had their own product and only wanted the acquisition for the customer base and sales team. While it initially looked like Agile had landed on its feet with this discounted acquisition, challenges lay ahead.
2012

2012-2015

UK Market Challenges and Handheld Trend

The UK market was going through a significant change during this period, entering a phase where the initial enthusiasm for powered carts was severely dented. This was due to issues experienced with early UK-made options that featured temperamental and unreliable SLA power systems. The situation was compounded by the fact that there was a growing trend toward handheld devices. Many NHS Trusts at this point were declaring that “cows are history,” referring to the wheeled computer workstations. However, this brief “flirtation” with handheld devices proved to be a very short-lived romance. Issues with charging, inadequate screen size, security concerns, and the obvious problem of tying up users’ hands while trying to provide patient care quickly came to light. The particular issue of screen size was fast becoming a major factor, with EPR systems like Cerner and Epic recommending a minimum of 24-inch monitors to best deliver the benefits of electronic patient records.
2012-2015

Late 2010s

Power System Revolution

Power systems were rapidly improving at this point, with lithium-ion batteries providing not only increased run times and vastly reduced charge times, but also intelligent functionality. These advanced battery systems provided much greater ability to manage a fleet of carts across multiple locations, restoring confidence in mobile workstation solutions and addressing the reliability issues that had plagued earlier systems.
Late 2010s

Late 2010s to Present

Major Project Implementations

The technological improvements and market acceptance led to several significant project implementations for Agile, including deployments at GOSH (Great Ormond Street Hospital), Homerton Hospital, and Addenbrookes Hospital. These projects demonstrated the successful evolution from the early challenges of the 1990s to sophisticated, reliable mobile workstation solutions.

Our Promise

At Exura by Agile, we’re committed to three key stakeholders:

  1. Assisting healthcare professionals in providing safe, accurate and dignified patient treatment.
  2. Equipping every healthcare professional with tools to deliver the best possible service.
  3. Maximising value for healthcare organisations through superior products with sustained service.

The Head of EPR at Great Ormond Street Hospital, said: “The staff love the carts! They are at the heart of the very flow and function of the hospital.”

Our solution ensures nothing ever impacts on an organisation’s ability to function at its best, allowing healthcare teams to focus on what they do best: provide care.

Our Environmental Commitment

At Agile Medical, we’re committed to sustainable healthcare technology through comprehensive recycling programmes and responsible manufacturing practices. As an ISO14001 accredited supplier, we offer take-back services, bringing end-of-life equipment back for component assessment and reuse.

Exura carts are manufactured from 80% aluminium and 20% steel, with 75% of components designed for recyclability. All end-of-life batteries are disposed of through our licensed waste carrier partner, Biffa Waste, ensuring safe and compliant disposal whilst helping healthcare facilities achieve their sustainability goals.
